Synesthesia

Music, for me, is a synesthetic experience: there is an inherent internal visual environment that accompanies the sound. The tonal centers, or keys-both major and minor- are the fundamental ground from which all western music, for the past 500 years, has arisen.

The geography each tonal center evokes in my mind’s eye is located at the inter-dimensional crossroads where the cosmic the subterranean and the platonic all meet and combine. They are spaces in turns familiar, strange, nostalgic, haunting, joyous and mind bending: sometimes all at once. Color and form arise, move and interact in ways both consonant and dissonant.

Music is fourth dimensional architecture: organized sounds, experienced through time.

These sound and video sculptures are an attempt to capture not only the visual representation of my synesthesia, but the feeling a key center will evoke when I contemplate each in silence. The feeling of a key will change, depending on the context. This collection, therefore, is a rendering of my reflection on the tonal centers at one moment in time. It is an attempt to capture an experience which, by its nature, is ephemeral.

Each of the musical compositions is in the respective key. That said, the eagle eared might notice that I did not strictly adhere to one major or minor scale in all keys: ie, the parent major and natural minor scales. For instance, the composition for the key of G major is in the mixolydian mode. This allows for harmonic modal interchange, or the borrowing of the minor chord of the same key. I do this intentionally to evoke a specific feeling in the music.

As a visually impaired artist, computer technology has liberated me from my physical limitations. I am now able, without having to use a cumbersome magnifying glass, to zoom in on any portion of a canvas. This allows me to render, mostly accurately, what I see in the environment, or in my mind’s eye. I am extremely grateful for these tools and for the opportunity they offer.

We are excited to launch our first collection as an NFT in 2023!
